Stierhuebelteich

An Afternoon in the Snowy North of Austria

snow -9 °C

Finally we have snow in Austria, but as it's just a little in the city, we decided to go the north of Austria where there is much more snow.

We started near the small village of Karlstift,

100_1527.jpg

using our snow shoes again.

100_1532.jpg

We really needed them there,

100_1536.jpg

in average the snow was 30-50cm high.

Later we reached the small lake "Stierhuebelsee", but could not see much of it, as it's surface was already frozen to ice.

On our way back we went through a cute forest with small...

and big trees.

Finally in late afternoon the sun also came out a bit, letting us see some beautiful blue skies.

Days are short in Austria in January, so the sun was going down soon again.

Let's hope for more snow, so that we also can try skiing soon!

Winter in the Austrian Mountains

Playing in the snow near Hochkönig, Salzburger Land

overcast 1 °C

We got tired of waiting for the snow to come to our place, so we decided to go to a place where we could find some snow.

We chose to go to mountain Hochkönig, right in the middle of Salzburg province.

Fortunately we did not get disappointed and found plenty of snow there. :)

Getting dressed at the car.

100_1169.JPG

Beautiful winter landscape.

100_1184.jpg

Nearby our parking place there was also a small skiing area.
However, we did not go skiing this time.

100_1179.jpg

We rather wanted to try walking with our snow shoes!

100_1193.jpg

The houses on this pictures are small pensions and hotels, mainly frequented by skiing tourists from Germany and the Netherlands.

100_1194.JPG

The "Mannlköpfe" are part of the big mountain "Hochkönig".
In summer they are a great playground for rock climbing .

100_1216.JPG

Making my first steps with the unfamiliar snow shoes.

100_1224.JPG

Omg, even though it is quite cold, walking in the snow can make one feel quite hot, so I have to take off some clothes.

100_1231.JPG

Trying to build a small snowman.

100_1238.JPG

100_1258.JPG

Continuing our way up.

100_1278.JPG

Feeling so tired...

100_1297.jpg

...but my honey still feels so fresh.

100_1307.jpg

Some skiers are passing by.

100_1308.jpg

We quickly asked them to take a picture of us. ;)

100_1310.jpg

Finally reaching our target...

100_1316.JPG

...a small hut with restaurant, which is usually very crowded in summer, but not inhabited in winter.

100_1338.JPG

Hmmm, too much snow. Cannot sit down here.

100_1336.JPG

So we had our picnic just on a carpet which we placed on the snow.
BTW the hot tea and hot wine tasted delicious. :)

100_1363.jpg

Near this hut is a big flat area, which is perfect for what we want to do after the picnic.

100_1347.jpg

First we make a small snowball...

100_1350.JPG

...and let it grow bigger...

100_1358.jpg

...and bigger.

100_1367.JPG

Then make another, smaller one.

100_1373.jpg

100_1379.JPG

And put it on top.

100_1387.JPG

Finally a third one.

Can you already guess what it is?

100_1401.JPG

Add a hat...

100_1406.JPG

...hairs, eyes, nose...

100_1408.JPG

...and give him a big smile.

100_1414.jpg

Now here he is finished: Our snowman! :)

100_1429.jpg

Posing with our cold friend.

100_1445.JPG

100_1461.JPG

But soon we have to say goodbye to him again, as it is time to go back.

100_1474.jpg

Some more views of the white winter landscapes.

100_1488.jpg

100_1492.JPG

All in all it was very nice to finally experience snow in the European winter!
